Moscow is the capital of Russia and one of the world's greatest cities. The city has been playing a vital role in the Russian history since it was first mentioned in the chronicles of 1147. Today Moscow is not only the political center of Russia, but also the country's leading city in population, in industrial output, and in cultural, scientific, and educational importance.
The historical stages of the Moscow growth are brightly shown by “the rings”. The center of all the rings is the Moscow Kremlin and the famous Red Square.
All the periods of the Moscow development are traced by the Boulevard Ring and the Garden Ring (both following the line of the former fortifications), the Moscow Little Railway Ring, and the Moscow Ring Road.
There are a lot of museums, theatres, educational institutions in Moscow. The State Academic Bolshoi ("Great") Theatre 1825, Maly ("Little") Theatre, and Moscow Art Theatre ("MHAT") are especially renowned.
The most significant museums are the Moscow Kremlin, the State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, the State Tretyakov Gallery and the Andrei Rubliov museum.
All the scientific researches are held by the Academy of Sciences of Russia.
The biggest city's library is named after V.I. Lenin. The old KGB headquarters building is known worldwide.
