The Museum of Fine Arts

The doors are always open at the Museum of Fine Arts in Kostroma, which occupies the premises of the former Romanov Museum.The museum has a large collection of paintings by great past and contemporary artists.Romanov museumwas built especially for Kostroma scientific-archive commission at the beginning of XX century by architect Gallitzin’s project. Russian imperator Nicolay II supported its magnificent opening. The great amount of expositions dedicated to Romanov dynasty’s history which reflected on its name. Constant exposition “Russian art XVII – XX” situates on the third floor and arranged in chronological order. The exposition emphasizes basic steps of Russian art school; different painting branches are widely demonstrated. There are artists expositions settled in the museum nowadays. Two exposition halls covered with paintings, graphic art, and ornamental art.Its collections were fulfilled with the works of art brought from local granges.State museum fund provided the museum with the works of I. Shishkin, K. Korovin, N. Klodt, I. Aivazovsky, M. Nesterov, V. Surikov, V. Serov, K. Somov, N.Rerikh and other.

The Kostroma branch of the Russian Cultural Foundation is working hard to develop culture and the study of local lore and preserve the region's cultural heritage. The main facets of its activities are "Culture and Creativity," "Country and Culture," "Culture, Education, and Science," and "Culture and the Publishing Business." Publishing projects and the preparation of cultural programs are being carried out under its guidance. The regional archives, science library, department of education, bishopric (eparchy), TV and radio broadcasting company, and city, district, and regional administrations all assist the foundation in its work.

Fire tower Kalancha and Gauptvakhta

The Fire tower Kalancha is an architectural monument of XIX century. The tower was built on an order of Baumgharten in 1824.Two stored building with beautiful portico and watching tower constructed to secure in case of fire. The building was restored in 1870-two wings for DEPO were built on, but in the ending of 90-th the building was returned in its previous condition. The monument was passed to Kostroma historical reserve in 2005.The monument of fire-fighter tower Kalancha represents the great historical and architectural value.Architectural monument Gauptvakhta of XIX, located in the main square of Kostroma. The monument built in 1823-1826 by architect Fursov project. Huge portico and rich decoration of the building dedicated to Russian army triumph in 1812.Due to the fact the monument has triumphant statuesque and gala image. During XIX – beginning XX cent the building was used as place for poisoned militaries (Decabrists). The monument included in ensemble with Kalancha tower. Later in the time of Soviet authority the building was passed to museum. The building in the restoration process now.

The Trinity Cathedral amazes visitors with its loftiness and beauty. The walls and vaulting of the main part of the church, altars, and cupolas are richly decorated with paintings by artists of the time. The cathedral also has a unique work of decorative carving: a royal chapel that was a gift of Mikhail Romanov. The cathedral's greatest possessions are a large number of icons and splendid works made of wood, bone, and stone by Old Russian craftsmen.

After the great fire in 1773. Wooden buildings of trade rows changed to the stone buildings. The Rows, the huge trade construction in Kostroma, ending of XVIII –beginning of XIX century, consists of more then 10 buildings different in size and location.The biggest rows are-Red rows, Big flour rows, (1789-96) with big columns and bell tower.

The Spasskaya (one of the most ancient monuments of Kostroma) church is included in Gostiniy dvor ensemble. Milk rows (1831-1832), Vegetable rows, Tobacco rows (1819-1822) are also included.The building of Butter rows (1809) is on the opposite site.Through the Red rows we can go to Gingerbread rows and there are two Fish rows opposite the Gingerbread rows.There is a big trade street- Milk mountain, between big Flour rows. The small Flour and Milk rows complete whole trade ensemble.

The monastery established in the middle of XV century by Sergiy Radonezhskiy’s follower-Nikita. The monastery was the first stone construction of Kostroma.

Now the monastery consists from two parts: Red church with dark domes (XVI) and White cathedral, with icon of Fyodorovskaya Bogomater (XIIIcent.), which connected with many miracles and enigmas. Some representatives of Saltikhovs’s dynasty are buried there.In 1918 the monastery was closed, and reopened in 90th. Now the monastery used as archbishop residence and as a workshop of church clothes and icons making.The main exhibit of the monastery is an icon of Fyodorovskaya Bogomater (XIII), which was painted in 1239 by the Prince Yaroslav’s order.

Church of Resurrection on the Debrya

The Church of the Resurrection on-the-Debre (Khram Voskreseniya Khristova na Debre), you can see the original paintings of the Three Saints Chapel (Trekhsvyatitelsky predel).The church situated near the Debrya River. Debrya means place which overgrown by deep woods. Many times ago there was deep wood where Princes came hunting. The church is notable for its triumphal and beautiful decoration .The building surrounded by porches with dooms. Some ancient frescoes (1650-1652) are preserved. Carved iconostas is inside the church. Entrance gates are decorated by England royal signs-lion, unicorn etc.

The church was built in 1683-85.It situated on the right bank of Volga river.Earlier the village Gorodizhe belonged to boyar Morozova, who illustrated on Surikov’s picture.

The church situated in Ipatievskaya sloboda near the Ipatiev monastery.The inner interior decorated by frescoes of XVIII century. The gates and hedge are also of XVIII century.

Gubernskie Prisutstvennie Mesta

The building is bright example of classicism style architecture.It erected in 1806-1808 by the architect Zakharov project.In 1832-33 the triumphal ladder was connected hall, which was decorated by six-columned portico.The great, half-round window and emblem are above the entrance in the center.

 

Volga river quay

 

There is an arbor from the stone near the Ostrovsky Street, which connects the quay.The viewing point is in the mound. And lower, where the quay head, is river port.

There are a lot of tourist vessels here in summer. We can easily get to Yaroslavl and Ples from here by swift-sailing vessel “Meteor” .
