Great Patriotic war museum/Armed Forces museum (Poklonnaya Hill)
The grand opening of the Victory Memorial on Poklonnaya Hill, dedicated to the victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 (Russian part of World War II) was held in Moscow on May 9, 1995. The Memorial includes: the 142-meter high main Victory Monument; the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War with an adjacent painting gallery; the Victory Park stretching for over 135 hectares; the Church of Great Martyr and Victory Bearer St. George, consecrated on May 6, 1995; The memorial Mosque built in 1997 in memory of servicemen- Muslims perished in the War; the Memorial Synagogue to memorize the Jews perished in the War and the Holocaust Memorial Museum opened in 1998; outdoor exhibitions of weapons and combat equipment and engineering structures. The Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 is situated in the very centre of the Victory Park. The memorial section of the Museum is the Hall of Glory where the visitors will see marble slabs engraved with the names of 11,717 participants of the war awarded the honorary title "Hero of the Soviet Union". Around the Hall of Memory there are six dioramas depicting the biggest battles fought during the war, executed by masters from the Grekov Studio of Battle Painting, cover a floor area of 1,500 square meters. |
