Andrey Rublev museum
The Museum of Early Russian Culture and Art named after an outstanding Russian icon painter Andrey Rublyov is located inside the former St. Andronicus Monastery. The museum boasts a rich collection of icons by the artist and also sculptures and murals of 14th to 19th centuries. Moscow, Tver, and Northern schools of icon painting are represented in the museum, as well as frescoes and wooden pieces of applied art. The pearls of the collection are the world-famous "Our Savior" (the 14th century), "John the Baptist" (the first half of the 15th century), "Our Lady of Tikhvin" (1680) and many others. Excursion to the museum includes an inside visit the monastery"s working Spassky (Savior) Cathedral, believed to be the oldest building in Moscow and still bearing traces of murals considered to have been painted by Rublyov himself. |
