Location/description: near the city center, 15,5 km from the Pulkovo airport. Grand Hotel Europe was erected in the center of the northern capital in the 20th of the 19th century by the project of a famous architect Carlo Rossi. It is considered to be one of the oldest buildings in Saint Petersburg. The hotel has a great history. In 1872 the building was reconstructed on the initiative of hotel “European” corporation (it was the former name of Grand Hotel Europe). The guests – famous Russian writers, artists and composers, appreciated European service and hospitality of the staff. The Revolution of 1917 influenced the history of the hotel. The building was used as a House of Soviet Soldiers, then as a repair for street children. In 1934 Soviet government reopened the hotel “European”, which was poorly furnished. During the World War II hotel “European” was used as a hospital for wounded people. And only in 1989 the building of the hotel was reconstructed again. The interiors remained in the style of modern, and the original fac,ade remained untouched. In 1991 Grand Hotel Europe became a 5-star hotel.
