Maslenitsa (the end of February – the beginning of March) – the English equivalent is Carnival.
Seven days of impetuous fun, reckless pleasures and solar mood! Certainly it is the Great Maslenitsa! All the Russians are sincerely happy that the severe winter ends and the long-awaited spring comes. Everybody bakes pancakes because a pancake is a symbol of the sun. The people congratulate each other with Maslenitsa. You can take a part in the different kinds of entertainments! There are the pancakes that everybody likes: with caviar, mushrooms and sturgeon baked for those who will decide to try the Russian national cuisine. Those who want to have fun with all the heart will have an opportunity to choose one of the Russian native entertainments: ice hills, snow fortresses, carousel, and Punch-and-Judy shows. It is impossible to enumerate everything! Maslenitsa was called “the kisser” by right. There was a tradition that the young men and girls became acquainted during the Great Maslenitsa to arrange a magnificent wedding in May on the Red Gorka.
