An Ancient Retreat From Moscow

The Golden Ring of Russia is a tourist route that goes through the ancient Russian towns that are situated not far from Moscow and can be earlily reached by car. Just 200km and you are already away from the hustle and bustle of the megalopolis.

The towns have been called "open air museums" and feature unique monuments of Russian architecture of the 12th–18th centuries, including kremlins, monasteries, cathedrals, and churches. Golden Ring has such a name because all of the cities build a symbolic circle in which each city is remarkable for its rich history and attractions, and together they constitute the treasury of Russian culture, a visual encyclopedia of ancient architecture.Golden Ring is a subject of great national pride for Russia as an example of rich historical and cultural heritage.

Winter is great time to explore this route when the snow sparkles and illuminates the stunning golden domes and colorful architecture. This tourist route is popular all year round, but it is in winter when you can see the views people generally associate with Russia:  snowy forests, onion domes of churches covered with snow, icicles hanging from buildings and wooden houses with smoke coming out of the chimneys.

In Golden Ring cities there are also opportunities to ride on snowmobiles or go dog-sleighing, cross-country skiing through forests or horse riding across snowy meadows.

As the Golden Rings cities are located relatively close to Moscow the weather there is usually similar to the weather in Moscow,but snow tends to lay longer in these cities than in Moscow.
